How to solve cloudy water in an aquarium
What does it look like?
- Milky / opaque wate
- Suspended dirt/dust in the aquarium water
What are the fish doing?
- Fish may be gasping at the surface in severe cases
- Unlikely to cause behavioural changes in your fish
What should I do?
- Treat with Quick Clear to remove suspended dirt
- Add some fine filter media to your filter like polymer wool to remove larger particles
- Test water for abnormalities and treat accordingly
Why does this happen and how do I prevent it?
Cloudy water can be caused by any particle too fine to be trapped in the filter such as :
- Fine particles of dust or dirt
- Bacterial blooms
- Algae blooms
Quick Clear clumps these fine particles together so that they settle out or are trapped by filter media
The best ways to help prevent cloudy water are
- regular water changes
- removing particles from substrate during water changes and using sludge removing products like Sludge Buster or Keep it Clean.
- introducing fine filter media like Polymer Wool to catch small particles
Many new aquarists will experience cloudy water caused by badly washed substrate when first filling the aquarium
What treatment should I use?
Quick Clear
Quick Clear acts rapidly, clumping fine particles together so that the filter can remove them, producing crystal clear aquarium water.
